Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas, and more generally the emancipation of African-American slaves throughout the Confederate South. In June 2021, Congress passed a resolution establishing Juneteenth as a National holiday; President Biden signed it into law on June 17, 2021.

ABOUT JUNETEENTH /
A CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM
On June 19, 1865, the Union General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas to inform inhabitants of the Civil War's end two months earlier. Two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Granger's first order of business was to read to the people of Texas, General Order Number 3, which stated significantly, " The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer."
June 19th - which was quickly shortened to "Juneteenth" among celebrants - has become the African American addendum to our national Independence Day. The mission of Juneteenth is to promote and cultivate knowledge and appreciation of Black History and Culture.

DR. ANN G. CAIN
SCHOLARSHIP
The Juneteenth Rock Hill Dr. Ann Cain Scholarship was established in June 2016 in memory of Dr. Ann G. Cain. Dr. Ann Cain spent her life educating children, encouraging them to strive for excellence and passing on the love of learning. She was a staple in her community and beyond. In the legacy and life of Dr. Ann Cain, this one time scholarship will be rewarded to a deserving high school student.
Completed applications should be postmarked no later than April 30, 2024 to be considered for the scholarship.
